Course overview

The ability to understand, develop and deliver mine site strategies and supporting systems is critical knowledge for established and aspiring site leaders alike. Learn from site leaders with decades of experience in navigating and translating corporate business strategy into mine objectives and developing your own strategies that address site and industry trends, risk and opportunities. The course focuses on how to both design and deliver mine strategy and methodologies for execution, leveraging good governance to identify and respond to external governing bodies and requirements, and internal governing systems With a focus on learning practical skills and applied knowledge, the course offers participants the opportunity to bring or reflect on their own site strategy for meaningful insights from industry leaders and peers.

Course structure

The five-week course is a collaborative, hands-on online learning experience, taking learners approximately 20 hours to complete. Please note the live sessions are not mandatory, the webinar will be recorded and available on the same day for participants who are unable to attend the live event. Course content includes:

  • Learning activities in the form of short test questions

Modules

Module 1

Industry Trends Drive Strategy Development

  • Describe the key industry trends to watch and how they feed into strategy  
  • Develop an ideal set of indicators that would provide useful competitor insights, including acquisitions/divestments, value chain and supplier agreements   
  • Consider the indicators that may signal an opportunity to work with others to increase organisational performance  
  • Deliberate on the relationship between strategy, organisational performance and external stakeholder perceptions  
  • Discuss ESG as a transformative trend in the industry  
  • Examine how monitoring indicators or trends that could affect strategy is an important part to being adaptable to change 

Module 2

Turning Strategy into Action

  1. Define and analyse the role of strategy in enabling businesses to succeed
  2. Examine methodologies for executing strategies
  3. Discuss the key strategic decisions impacting your role as mine manager
  4. Describe the difference between strategy and planning
  5. Construct the actions of a mine manager that ensures strategy is actioned
  6. Describe corporate governance

Module 3

Governing Codes and Legislation

  1. Describe the laws, rules and codes that monitor the resources industry and how they interrelate
  2. Explain the causes of common disclosure failures
  3. Examine the role of manager in ensuring minimum standards for professional practices and public reporting 
  4. Describe the legislative frameworks that inform the duty of care of a mine manager
  5. Examine the rise of ESG as a political and ethical discussion   
  6. Outline the actions of a mine manager that ensures team members comply with governing codes and legislation
  7. Describe the difference between governance and compliance

Module 4

Strategic Threats, Risk Prevention and Mitigation

  1. Explain the process of effective risk management
  2. Examine common external strategic threats and identify ways to mitigate these
  3. Examine the impact of ESG on managing risk
  4. Examine common internal strategic threats and identify ways to mitigate these
  5. List the fiscal and management risks of very high impact/very low possibility events
  6. Conduct a SWAT analysis to identify risks / improve mitigation strategies in the workplace

Stephen Williams

Stephen is a creative thinker with a solid understanding of the technical, financial and organisational issues which drive enterprise performance. Stephen understands the concerns of company boards and financiers within the resources sector particularly with regard to major capital projects and company transactions.

Stephen has more than 25 years’ experience in the resource industry in operational, project development, consulting, managerial and governance roles. Stephen’s resource sector experience has been in open pit, underground and mineral sands mining, downstream processing and manufacturing. His commodities experience includes copper, coal, gold, iron ore, lead, zinc, silver, nickel, diamonds, industrial minerals, uranium and bauxite.

Stephen has extensive international experience in resource project development, mergers, acquisitions and divestments. He has provided technical, environmental and stakeholder input to asset evaluation (risk and valuation) as part of the due diligence processes while working and reporting directly to company boards and financial brokers.

Neil Conway

Associate, Enthalpy Pty Ltd
Neil has had extensive experience at a senior managerial level across Rio Tinto, a global mining group.

Primarily Neil has been involved in leading major capital investment studies for the Rio Tinto Group. He was involved in or led the studies which led to the development of the Hail Creek coking coal mine, the Kestrel underground coking coal mine and the Clermont thermal coal mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin.

Neil has also been involved in assisting with the divestment of major operations (Clermont Coal mine in the Bowen Basin of Queensland).

Prior to leaving Rio Tinto Neil led a major process safety initiative across the Rio Tinto Group which culminated in a US$500M capital spend to protect personnel in the event of potentially catastrophic process failure events.

Erin Sweeney

Senior Manager of Strategy and Growth, MEC Mining
With a career spanning from the coal basins in Queensland to the high-altitude ranges of Ecuador, Erin has worked underground and in the open pit across multiple commodities in the mining industry as a geologist, geotechnical engineer, mine engineering manager and acting mine manager. With a career now focused on Brand, Strategy, and Growth in the consulting sector, she has leveraged her wide spanning industry experiences and knowledge to track emerging industry trends and evolving governance and legislation impacts on mining. Erin is passionate about formulating strategy that allows business to navigate through multifaceted challenges in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA).
